Starfish Properties Student Art Awards Exhibition

Amelie Proulx, a just-graduated Master of Fine Arts student from NSCAD, can pursue her work with a bit more breathing room thanks to a new art award she won last Friday. The Starfish Properties Student Art Award, created by both David and Louis Reznick, is in its inaugural year and Proulx was announced the winner of the $5,000 purchase prize last Friday at the award gala. “This recognition will allow me to pursue my artistic research with the confidence that my work is evocative to a broad audience,” writes Proulx. Recognition is just what the Reznicks had in mind when creating the award. “David has a collection of students’ work, and Louis really liked that idea,” says Jane Hopgood, director of NSCAD University relations. David’s art bank holds purchased student art that’s displayed throughout the university. Proulx, having won the purchase prize, will have her work (pictured) placed in the collection. Honourable mentions were given to Zoltan Ric and Jessica Hein. Hopgood says the award is planned for the next five years, so it’ll have some longevity. “I think people will be looking to see who the finalists are every year,” she adds. Check out Proulx, Ric and Hein’s work---as well as the remaining six finalists---at PortLoggia until May 16. –Holly Gordon
