Speed dating for the arts

An event called boardLink hooks you up with arts organizations that need volunteers, but you have to date them first.

Wipe off those sweaty palms and steady yourself---this is the kind of speed dating that doesn't require the freshest of breath (though it is appreciated). Head to the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia tonight to speed date arts organizations in the city that are looking for volunteers. You get a match form, they get a match form, then you walk around to the organizations' tables and see who is your best match---in a volunteering capacity. Called boardLink, this is its first event in Atlantic Canada, though one of the organizers, Jane Shkolnik, says it has taken off successfully in other cities, such as Calgary, Edmonton, Toronto, Montreal and Ottawa. BoardLink is run by artsScene, a cross-Canada initiative to get young professionals involved in the arts that also partnered with Fusion Halifax to get its start in the city. Organizations looking to speed date include 2b theatre, Art Gallery of NS, Ballet Jorgen Canada, Dance NS, Debut Atlantic, Halifax Dance, Imagine Bloomfield, Jazz East Rising, Khyber Digital Media Society, Live Art Productions, Nocturne, NS Masterworks Awards Foundation, NS Youth Orchestra Foundation, onelight theatre, Performing Arts Lodge, Saint Mary's University Art Gallery, Scotia Festival of Music, Shakespeare by the Sea, Eastern Front Theatre, Upstream and Zuppa Theatre Co. "You don't have to bring anything except your passion for the arts," assures Shkolnik.
