Southern Shores

Beat-laden pop with visual appeal

Two of Halifax’s best-kept secrets have finally started making a name for themselves. Guitarist Ben Dalton and producer/beatmaker Jamie Townsend formed Southern Shores while living together in Berlin last fall. Less than a month after posting their first track “Grand Comore” on Soundcloud, New York/LA-based label Cascine Records offered to release a six-song EP (slated for a mid-July release) of the bubbly pop. Southern Shores---along with guitarist Paul Conrod and Dalton’s brother Seamus on drums--- played its first live set to a packed Tribeca two weeks ago. “We’d postponed three shows because we didn’t feel ready,” Townsend says. “Why would you rush that kind of thing?” The group hopes to avoid being thought of as DJs and solidify itself as an exciting live band. “We’re working on incorporating really strong visuals into it. It’s something we’ve wanted to do from the start.”
