Solange Knowles

True (Terrible)

solange-review.jpg
For years Solange Knowles struggled to escape the shadow cast by her older sister, unable to achieve the same mainstream success. Now that R&B has been heralded by tastemakers as the most hip of all genres, Solange has reinvented herself as one of the movement’s indie figureheads. Her new EP, True, has the fingerprints of fellow scenesters Twin Shadow and Grizzly Bear, but the breezy, funky vibes of tracks such as “Losing You” are more informed by Prince and Janet Jackson than Williamsburg. This combination of influences, however, proves to be a perfect formula, as True retains the populist appeal of R&B without the occasional campy pandering.
