Smash Mouth

Get the Picture

Published September 04, 2003.Smash MouthGet the Picture(Interscope)Smash Mouth takes a knowledge of punk-rock dynamics to concoct still peppy, less angry music. Elements of surf and ska skate in and out, with amiably forceful vocals from Steve Har-well. A Neil Diamond song, “You Are My Number One,” is given the UB40 treatment to assure yet another hit. The way Smash Mouth amps and speeds up during the chorus kicks ass reliably on “Whole Lotta Love” and “105.” Any calculation is invisible. It’s so sublime and sweaty, you’ll quake with California cool. —Doug Taylor

Survey Asks

Should council use the yet-to-be-finalized Centre Plan when debating new developments?

  • No, it doesn’t exist yet and is still likely to change
  • Yes, thousands of hours of work and consultation have gone into what’s already assembled
  • Maybe, it really depends on what’s being proposed by the developer
  • I don’t know what the Centre Plan is and do not wish to participate in this poll
