Significant Figures is to die for

Igor Kolodin takes a mystic look at the famous.

Jack the Ripper never looked as good as he does in Igor Kolodin's latest collection, Significant Figures. Through his unique details and dark undertones, Kolodin creates portraits that are haunting and intriguing. Kolodin, a Russian Jewish immigrant, borrows from the Russian aesthetic of painted faces with no angled shots. His characters are set upon a stage in a dark background. Their round-shaped faces give a look of innocence. Kolodin's visual appeal lies in the details. Many of his works, particularly Piranida, feature miniature heads with intricate expressions of happiness, shock and curiosity. There are also religious undertones in the collection with the Jewish star featured prominently in some of the works. A few portraits of humans with horns and cat faces are also humorous and clever. Perhaps the most intriguing are Vampire and Jack. But watch out for the bones underneath.
