Should’ve, would’ve, could’ve

To the editor,

Thank you for focusing your April 13 issue on the Spring Garden and Queen empty land ("Field of dreams," Mike Fleury). Together with the empty Community College space on the other side of Spring Garden, these large tracts of land once represented the livelihoods of the small businesses around them. Families visiting the Infirmary were likely to buy magazines, flowers, gifts and of course visit local hotels, stores and restaurants in the downtown area; a similar example could be made of the population that once occupied the Community College. Short-term solutions must repopulate the area. Long-term solutions should have been made before the area looks the way it does. At least HRM or Council should learn a lesson from the level of destruction caused to an important site without a forseeable solution.
