Shelly Maynard and Mark Foley mastered the art of meeting in the middle on the first day they met.
After arriving on the pier of the Saint John ferry, Shelly and her best friend bumped into Mark—a med school classmate of Shelly’s friend who was waiting on a ferry to Digby—and “it was love at first sight.” The pair moved to Victoria post-graduation in 2011, got engaged in Portland, Oregon in 2012, and after wedding planning from the west coast, moved back to Dartmouth eight weeks before their their big day. To unwind, they hosted a cottage kitchen party on the eve of their wedding, because who doesn’t love a pre-party party? On a warm and sunny autumn day they tied the knot at St. Bernard Church—but not before a pitstop at Frenchy’s—and celebrated at Digby Pines, the halfway point between Mark’s hometown in the Valley and Shelly’s in Yarmouth. The little details of the day reveal the amount of planning that went into it—a cheese cake (actual cake made of cheese wheels) from Pete’s, canned sea-salted chocolate fish from Sugah! (a hint of Shelly’s former life at the Yarmouth cannery), empty medication bottle vases on every table (Shelly’s an ICU nurse, Mark a doctor) and the photo of Shelly’s late mother that adorned her bouquet (a gift from Mark’s sister). “Our wedding day was relaxed, romantic and happy,” says Shelly. “I really enjoyed the process of planning a wedding and all the little DIY projects that can come with it. It was so nice to arrive back home and then have a big wedding where we got to celebrate with all our family and friends.”
