Photographer Shehab Illyas has a story to tell: that of the personality and lifestyle of Halifax's scooter owners. Walk into FRED on Agricola Street and you can follow his portraiture narrative, with local owners and their scoots placed casually in front of landmarks such as Gus' Pub, the Common, Lost & Found and Pilcher's Flowers. "I wanted to capture the variety of personality, and the scooters that they [scooter owners] buy and work on," says Illyas of his work. Also a band member of alt-rock group Mir, Illyas bought a replica of a 1980s Vespa 150PX about five years ago and met some of the people he shot for this show through the Halifax Scooter Council. "I just found it interesting, the different kinds of people that own scooters---doctors to musicians to such a wide, wide variety." The blues, yellows, reds and pinks of Illyas' portraits are underscored by the greying of certain background elements, making for an interestingly retro feel to this photographed walk through the city. Meet Illyas at the opening reception, Monday, July 12 from 7-9pm. –Holly Gordon
