Shannon Brown's sweet retreat

A NSCAD student illustrates her own children's story with The Pastry King .

Shannon Brown isn't all about the pictures, she's a storyteller too. The Pastry King showcases a collection of sketches and paintings inspired by characters and scenes from a children's story that she's been working on since the summer. Brown's quirky tale takes place in a town full of bakers who are ruled by an incredibly greedy and hungry king who forces the sweet-toothed-townspeople to live off salad and hand deliver trays of treats to him daily. "He's this massive, gargantuan man who eats all the baked goods. He doesn't allow anyone else to have the smallest grain of sugar or drizzle of chocolate." Preliminary ink drawings and oil paintings will cover one wall of the gallery and Brown will paint a huge portrait of The Pastry King himself of the other wall the night before the show opens---that's something to sink your teeth into.

Feb 8-12, Anna Leonowens Gallery, 1891 Granville Street
