Seven under $7

The holy grail in eating out on the cheap in Halifax is a meal under $7, and we've got a lucky seven options on the menu again this year.

$4.99: Pulled Pork Sandwich

Boneheads BBQ
1014 Barrington street, 407-4100

"Succulicious," that's the only way staff at Boneheads BBQ could describe their pulled pork sandwich in one word. The fresh Kaiser bun is paired with a heaping pile of slow-cooked pork. The meat, which cooks for an average of eight to 10 hours, is smothered in the signature smokehouse sauce and served alone. "It's definitely the most popular item on the menu," says Cindy Wheatley. "It's delicious meat on a bun."

$6.65: Omelette and toast

Blowers Street Paperchase Cafe
5228 Blowers Street, 423-0750

Paperchase Cafe is heaven for the hearty eater (and the hungover). Made-to-order omelettes are fresh, stuffed with your choice of vegetable and cheese. It's just like you'd make it at home---nothing fancy but it always hits the spot. If you're not necessarily feeling up for breakfast in the afternoon, the large majority of the menu is offered for just under $7.

$6.84 BBQ Eggplant Pita

Tarek's Cafe
3045 Robie Street, 454-8723

This is a mean pita: nearly seven-and-a-half inches long and weighing close to a pound, and packed full of delicious ingredients like the obvious eggplant, tabouli, cabbage, onion and other fresh vegetables. Making great pitas takes time. On cold days, staff often offer a free soup sample to thaw people's insides while customers wait to indulge on their healthy dish.

$6.95 Pizza and Salad

Hami's Cafe and Catering
Alderney Drive, Dartmouth, 406-1777

Slices so large and so decadent, one would consider eating the whole pizza. One piece alone is $3.95, but for an extra $3, you can enjoy a side of salad. "It's a huge piece for that price," says Hami, the owner. Most of the meat used here comes from Brothers Meat and Delicatessen on Agricola Street.

$5.65: Tomato Brie Panini

Humani-T Cafe
5755 Young Street, 454-9999

Served on fresh bread with sesame seeds, the panini is overloaded with delicious cheese. The deep brown grill marks on the sandwich are like the preamble to what's inside---a mountain of spinach, tomato, herbs and gooey brie make for the perfect snack. Be warned, you will probably need at least three pieces of paper towel to wipe the cheese running down your chin.

$5.75: Sweet Potato Tempura

Doraku Japanese Restaurant
1579 Dresden Row, 425-8888

Not only is Doraku the perfect place to leave the city's hustle and bustle, it also boasts an impressively inexpensive menu. The sweet potato tempura roll, made with avocado and spicy mayo is a fantastic way to introduce people to the world of sushi. The restaurant also allows for pickup orders, perfect for those days when the grocery store is farther away than you'd like.

$6: Fishcakes and Green Tomato Chow

Emma's Eatery
31 Cow bay Road, Eastern Passage, 406-0606

Fishcakes are hit or miss, but Kim Stacey serves them just right. The healthy meal is made from local salt cod or haddock and served with green tomato chow. "They're all gluten free and dairy free," says Stacey. "It's not even on purpose, I just don't like cooking with flour." Sure, Eastern Passage is a bit of a drive, but the fresh air and Stacey's homemade food justifies it.
