Serenity: The Shepherd's Tale

By Zack Whedon and Joss Whedon and artist Chris Samnee (Dark Horse)

Though Firefly went off the air in 2002, Joss Whedon has managed to keep the ’verse alive not only through a movie but also in several comic book spin-offs. The latest one, Serenity: The Shepherd’s Tale is written by Whedon and his brother Zack and focuses on Shepherd Book: a man of god with a dark past. The story moves backwards, starting at the end of Book’s life and ending with his childhood. While the comic is an interesting read, it’s also kind of pointless. Part of Book’s appeal on the show had been his mysteriousness. By spelling everything out, the Whedons take away one of the more interesting aspects of Book’s character.
