Two men wake up in a grungy, industrial bathroom. They’re shackled to opposite walls. In between them is a dead man with a self-inflicted gunshot wound. What follows is a bloody but creative gross-out thriller, the kind of movie that ignores plausibility, reality and even, in places, common sense, to tell its story. The best parts of the picture involve medieval contraptions and high-concept art direction right out of a Marilyn Manson video. The acting and dialogue is horrendous, the characters do all sorts of dumb things, the colour red is overused in the operatic production design, but there’s no denying the high entertainment value. Saw is frequently and unintentionally hilarious, and it will keep you guessing. The Uncut Edition comes in a squidgy, fake-blood covered case and contains an extra disc. It includes the original short Saw, which is easily the best thing in the whole package, including the feature film.
