Sarah Slean
The Baroness Redecorates
(Warner)
Paris unhinged Sarah Slean. She revisits the darker notes found in the city of lights. The album begins with a quirky theatrical outburst, “Parasol,” which directly contrasts the classical elements of this b-sides collection. “Lonely Side of the Moon” is part dream, part nightmare and could perfectly score a Tim Burton flick. “Modern Man I & II” is a feast of science, philosophy and poetics. The sweeping melodic ebb and flow movement of “Hear Me Out” eventually falls into aching lyrical terrain. “The Disarm Suite” showcases Slean’s exceptional musicianship, as a composer. This album deserves the company of a glass of fine red wine.
