Easy Tiger is the best album Ryan Adams has put out in recent memory. It’s consistently great from start to finish. Curse-laden rockers (“Halloweenhead”), quivering ballads (“Oh My God, Whatever, Etc.”) or straight-up bluegrass (“Pearls on String”) are tossed off with ease, passion and conviction. Not that those traits were lacking before, it’s just that from Love is Hell on it was like he was trying to sound like someone else (Rolling Stones, Morrissey, Willie Nelson). Maybe we’ve come to accept that Adams writes from all these different personalities, but Easy Tiger is a culmination of those ideas into something genuine and deeply heartfelt.
