Ryan Adams & the Cardinals

Jacksonville City Nights

Ryan Adams & the Cardinals
Jacksonville City Nights
Lost Highway
Fans of Whiskeytown and Ryan Adams’ early albums can start rejoicing. Jacksonville City Nights is Adams in full-on, capital-C Country regalia. You will be able to tell from the opening slide guitar and Adams’ quivering near-falsetto on “A Kiss Before I Go,” or the Willie Nelson-influenced “The End” which sings of runaway fathers and suffocating towns. “The Hardest Part” is the closest thing to the songs he wrote for Whiskeytown, an uptempo, rollicking alt-country number. And the contemplative saloon piano based “Silver Bullets” and “September” could easily fit on Heartbreaker. This is perhaps an even more solid collection of songs from start to finish than Cold Roses, and not a single Morrissey or Stones reference in sight.
