Run For Your Wife

Thank god for the cast

Run For Your Wife
What's the secret to great comedy? Gordon Gammie.

Please tell me I’m not the only one who finds Ray Cooney’s Run For Your Wife hopelessly dated. I love a good comedy, but I find it difficult to work up a lot of enthusiasm for a play that’s as rife with gay caricatures as this one is. So, while you know where I stand on the material itself, I have to admit that I enjoyed the fast pace and comic timing of this Festival Antigonish production. The heart of the show is Gordon Gammie as bigamist John Smith. The role requires the stamina of a marathoner and the timing of a first-rate comedian and Gammie delivers both. Michael Ferguson is a joy to watch as his bumbling best friend Stanley, and Genevieve Steele and Francine Deschepper do fine jobs as the utilitarian wife and the sex-pot wife respectively. Kudos for the cast. Raspberries for the playwright.
