Rumpelstiltskin

Bring a young one and enjoy

From the reaction of the kids in the audience of Rumpelstiltskin, I’d say Child’s Play Theatre has struck a chord. Their short (45 minute), simple retelling of the classic fairy tale seemed a lovely introduction to theatre for children under the age of eight. There’s nothing fancy about the production (a bare stage with a spinning wheel on it, simple costumes, bare-bones lighting), but the children seemed hungry for the magic of straw being spun to gold, delighted by the silly songs and satisfied by the happy ending. This is not the type of theatre that provides much back story or subtext for the adults in the audience, but in this case, our enjoyment comes from watching the happy, engaged young theatre-goers and revisiting stories from our own childhoods.
