Ridley Bent

Buckles & Boots

Ridley Bent
Buckles & Boots
(Open Road)
Halifax-born Bent grew up in western Canada and quickly reveals there's a lot going on under that big black hat of his. "Nine Inch Nails" is the cutest song about records in years. It's a rousing two-step about a break-up with hasty allocation of assets: "She got my Tom T. Hall, I got her Husker Du." Bent's gentle vocal style might remind you of Whispering Bill Anderson. John Ellis, who produces and plays pedal steel, provides a Nashville-sheen for the BC session. A notable departure is "Apache Hairlifter," an eight-minute wild west saga delivered in hip-hop. It's a country clash of the 19th and 21st centuries, doggone it!
