After the live 1,000 Years of Popular Music that featured all covers, Front Parlour Ballads is a full set of Thompson acoustic originals. This is certainly a cause for celebration among fans since it is his first entire disc of acoustic material since 1981’s Strict Tempo! The record features a solid set of sparse songs that (unfortunately) lack much of Thompson’s guitar prowess. This approach works well in the context of his chosen songs. The disc is as eclectic as a lot of his work, rounding out with some slower bitter numbers and some up- tempo tunes such as the opener “Let it Blow.” As fine or better a record than anything he has put over the last 10 to 15 years and certainly a necessity for fans.
