Follow the leader.

How much of what we do is an expression of our individuality, and how much is a form of mimicry? Groupthink, a new dance show from Nostos Collectives, explores and muddies these questions, using six talented performers and a killer soundtrack. The choreography shows the dancers imitating and influencing one another, sometimes evoking a marionette and puppetmaster, or a game of follow-the-leader, but with much deeper and darker undertones. Groupthink creates its own language where what is being communicated isn’t always clear, but there is something is happening between the performers that is palpable, at times for its intimacy, at other times for its sheer strangeness. I found myself creating several narratives throughout the show, as each track moves in a new direction while building on what came before. Who exactly is in control? What is the relationship between these women? The performers’ faces remain neutral, not giving much away, but there seems to be a wealth of story to uncover.
