Reduce, reuse, repair

The Mended Blender Upcycle Cafe is an all-day fix it up bonanza.

With repair services seemingly a thing of the past, and closets full of disposable things designed not to last, what started as an assignment for sustainability student Shauna Doll has evolved into a full day of getting back on track. The Mended Blender Upcycle Cafe is a vision based on programs in the Netherlands and Moncton with help from a Clean Nova Scotia grant. "It's kind of a pilot," says Doll, hoping for enough interest to do more. "Anyone who's willing to share a skill or has something to teach is welcome to come and share that knowledge." The cafe features workshops that'll show you how to DIY everything from vermicomposting, solar panel-building, guitar restringing, furniture and bike repair, to computer clean-ups, natural beauty products and henna tattoos. Plus, you'll get a chance to spring-clean your closet and swap clothes for discarded gems. Round it all off with three free yoga practices at 10:30am, 2pm and 4pm (BYOMat), and free food from The Wooden Monkey for early birds, and you'll be smiling for days, just as Doll planned. "I want to create positive energy that lasts," she says.
