REC 3: Genesis

Directed by Paco Plaza (Sony)

The REC films are a series of horror movies from Spain that use the country’s Catholicism as a backdrop for a zombie apocalypse. The religious overtones get more apparent with each film, with them being especially prominent in REC 3. Koldo and Clare are a young couple who have just gotten married. The wedding is going great until zombies crash the reception and the newlyweds are separated. The two spend the rest of the film trying to find each other while avoiding zombified wedding guests. REC 3 might be the third in a series but it works as a standalone film. It has a very different atmosphere from the first two movies—REC and REC 2 were claustrophobic found footage films whereas REC 3 thumbs its nose at found footage and has a much broader narrative. REC 3 might not be as scary as the first two, but it has a sense of humour and gusto that the first two lack.
