Rango stalls

Great animation is weighed down by a padded plot.

Pirates of the Caribbean director Gore Verbinski and star Johnny Depp venture into the world of animation, a journey that yields inconsistent results. Depp voices the title character, a domesticated chameleon left stranded in the Mojave desert. Searching out sustenance and companionship, he ends up in the Wild West town of Dirt, where he backs into the role of sheriff and quickly finds that while the water taps are dry, corruption is overflowing. Verbinski loads the film with references to classic Westerns and some trippy, hallucinatory sequences, as well as a computer-animated animal cast with incredibly human facial expressions. He over-packs, though, when it comes to plot, padding Rango’s fish-out-of-water story with a half-assed environmental message and action set pieces that halt, rather than accelerate, the movie’s momentum.
