Re: “There's no taste like home

This sounds like so much fun! I wish I was still in Halifax, I'd totally sign up and drag some friends along too.

Re: ““We need people”

May I just mention that the Mayor also knows nothing about how university tuition works (which, to his credit, he admits). International students are charged more because that's the cost of education. Universities are subsidized - but it we only get dollars from the gov't for our domestic students. Not our international ones. And typically international students use more campus resources than domestic, as well - support services, etc - there's a whole extra department built to support them. So there's that. Of course, we do hope they'll stay and help populate the maritimes, they're educated, have created ties, have some understanding of the culture, so they're prime targets. There are residency options targeted specifically to international students for that reason. But, the federal gov't has recently made changes and cut the #s they're allowing in any given year. Ah, red tape.

And then - BBQ! How fun! ;p

Re: “The missing, the mourned

This a a very good article. It's an important topic.
FYI: Mount Allison University is located in Sackville - not Acadia. You may want to change that.

Re: “Sherman Downey’s Sun rises

I saw these guy in Sackville NB a couple of weeks ago - and even with the tiny crowd (university on strike = no students) - they were so fabulous and energetic. I hope the show in Hali went well!

Re: “The Brown Hound

Three of us tried this out over the weekend. I've been wanting to try it for ages, mostly because it's "different".

Decor was lovely, the servers were very friendly and knowledgeable. And the food was good. We decided to go for caipirinhas and sangria to drink instead of a bottle of wine - they were a real treat.

Between us we tried the cassava cheese bread, some kind chicken appetizers, stuffed in a dough... and the mushroom carpaccio. They had a big selection of appetizers and it was hard to choose. We probably wouldn't do the mushrooms again, but the other two were delicious.

I went for the piri piri - which may have been the best thing I've had in a restaurant in a while. It was spicy, the meat was tender and juicy, it was the best meal at the table. My boyfriend had a steak and was a little disappointed in his choice and really regretted not trying the taste of brazil menu. Though he was vindicated in his choice of dessert - a white cheese/guava concoction which was truly delicious. My friend's seafood rice was ok - but very "fishy", she couldn't eat it all.

I think with selective ordering and understanding the menu a bit better, this would have been a really stellar meal for us all. We're totally up for a return trip!
