Poor Boy Sure Thing

When: March 1 2009

Zuppa Theatre Co. is not afraid to take risks. Their theatre pieces are unique and fantastical, and the company is always open to change and new ideas. This policy stood them in good stead when Stewart Legere, the star of their “pop music fantasia” Poor Boy, broke his foot opening week. His use of metal crutches has been choreographed into the show in brilliant ways, and even explained with a back-story that has the character, the despondent rock star Sherman Oakes, throwing himself from heights as he mourns the death of his self-destructive girlfriend. Oakes’ descent into madness touches his nerdy manager (Ben Stone) an off-kilter groupie (Susan Leblanc-Crawford) and a maternal hotel clerk (Kathryn McCormac). While Poor Boy is engaging theatre, it has a dream-like quality that makes it difficult to hold on to the wispy threads of the story once the play is over. ---Kate Watson
