Playing the rails

Local singer Gianna Lauren kicks off a cross-Canada train tour with Field Assembly.

Gianna Lauren is about to hop a train to the other side of Canada in what looks to be a new local musician trend: for free, as long as she performs while travelling on the VIA Rail legs of her trip. "A few fellow musicians have spoken highly of the experience," she says, naming artists Klarka Weinwurm and Acres and Acres' Kris Pope as some of that few. Lauren just finished recording her newest album with In-Flight Safety's Daniel Ledwell---which will be officially released in September---and while she plans on performing her own music with Field Assembly (Adam Fox) while travelling, she says she's learning covers so train-takers can connect with the music. "We've got a couple Beatles songs, and we have to do our share of Cancon as well so Neil Young and Joni Mitchell...I can't wait to play Fleetwood Mac songs."
