Pericles

Smooth sailing for DalTheatre with Shakespeare's problem play

pericles-picture.jpg

Stunning! That’s the word that sums up the DalTheatre production of Shakespeare’s shaggy dog story Pericles. The play, which tells an outlandish tale of a young prince’s adventures including multiple shipwrecks, the death (and resurrection) of his true love and the prostitution of his steadfastly virginal daughter, is all over the map (literally). However, the performances in this production are so outstanding that it’s thrilling to be along for the ride. Jackson Fowlow is wonderfully open and vulnerable as Pericles, and his father-daughter reconciliation with Marina (Meagan Marshall, who radiates purity in voice and spirit) will move the hardest of hearts. There are several actors who play multiple roles, and their transformations are so convincing that oftentimes the program must be consulted to prove they are truly the same people. The set, a multi-level "stone" structure, is breath-taking and amazingly versatile. The costumes are exquisite. Aesthetically and emotionally, this play delivers, despite the challenges of a truly preposterous plot.
