Re: “Decent Money Does Not A Good Job Make...

Start working the bare minimum too 9 to 5, and pursue a hobby that you are passionate about that you can think about even while at work. Don't do anything for anyone unless they force you into some sort of ultimatum situation. If you like a sport - go play or do it everyday, if you like art or working with your hands take a course that starts at 5 or 6 so you force yourself out of the workplace on time. My understanding is that once you are a permanent government employee it's almost like getting tenure as a prof - so treat it how tenured profs treat their jobs. Don't do any real work and pursue hobbies you are passionate about. Who knows - perhaps a hobby could become your new career?

Re: “I Love Halifax. Haligonians, not so much.

OP, your post was a bit harsh and maybe a bit full of generalizations and stereotypes; you kind of espouse the attitude of those you're criticizing. Try to drop it. However, I do agree with one thing you said - we do need more immigrants in the Atlantic provinces and a bit more cultural integration without destroying cultures themselves. We need more people period to get the kind of services that other provinces enjoy. Hang in there, OP - don't let your anger get the better of you. I'm not an immigrant, but I'm sure my ancestors felt much of the same when they were 4-6 generations. Being in a new place is difficult and I can understand the frustration. Thinking constantly in a language that is not your own is tiring; or, if you speak the language perfectly it's frustrating to hear responses of people who think you don't.

PS. To Oceanlady - I can think of at least one piece of infrastructure in this country that was not created by 'whites' - and perhaps the most important piece of infrastructure the CN railway. Also, in the process of 'whites hard work' I think we managed to destroy a couple of hundred cultures that were native to this continent. We owe all this to cultural/racial profiling, wish we would all (OP included) drop that attitude.

Re: “Lessons for Diners.

Solution where all parties win: sliding scale - mark up of $20-30 for food service per person where customers can act like total douches with their heads up their arses. If no such mark up exists rules #1-7 are fair game and more than justified by the most likely underpaid staff.

Re: “please, shut the fuck up.

Oh god - I hope it's not my housemate. He does that, and he's the best - but it annoys the fuck out of me too.

Re: “Climate change and the Spryfield fire

2.5 questions for Tim from an ecological modeller (who purportedly is supposed to know what's going on):

1. When was the Earth's climate 'static'? Has it ever been?

2. Could you qualify the term 'statistically irrelevant'?

Thanks.

PS. If I ever attempted to make the kinds of jumps with the kind of language and data you're using here in scientific peer-reviewed journals - I'd be bitch slapped into tomorrow and in search of a new job.

PPS. Just sayin'...

Re: “Market migraine

Yes Kay, thanks for that clarification on permits to busk - you're right; however, what I was saying is that there should be some sort of quota - much like lobster fishing licenses. Those who got the goods by some criteria drawn up by the public (i.e. the ability to sing in key, write their own lyrics, do more than just strum their guitar or whatever you want) can stay - the other 'small business' owners should recognize their failure at music and at life (if they're real old) and should take a hike to Timbuktu or Calgary and get a job at McDonalds. I'm all for good, quality small business - but not so much for many lazy fuckwads who haven't taken the hint that maybe their chosen path (playing music in enclosed spaces) isn't for them. Failure at one thing is ok - it's just a measure showing you're not very good at something and maybe you should try something else. Really, it's a measure for everyone's benefit.
As for people acting the same way according to my tongue-in-cheek whims, a girl can dream can't she?

Re: “Market migraine

Hey 'kay', is that your real name? I happen to know the OP - and technically, she did post her first name. She also normally doesn't hesitate to 'offer her opinion' and I'm pretty sure she's expressed her discontent to the 'musicians' at the market. I think bitching is a way to get others to act the same way. Besides, let's face it - there really are too many 'musicians' at the market - they really should have auditions for that shit, as it's prime busking area. Those deemed alley cats in heat will have to play elsewhere.

Re: “Salvatore's Pizzaiolo Trattoria

Best pizza in Halifax, hands down (better than Morris East for sure). Possibly the best pizza I've ever tasted - anywhere, even better than pizzerias in Italy (maybe it's just my taste). Even if delivery is a bit slow, the service there is friendly and happy. Every pie is made with love.
