Re: “Love the boat

Excellent appraisal of a film that should rightly be considered a masterpiece, despite its imperfections. Those who hurl the most scorn at Cameron's movie were, I suppose, hoping for Cohen brothers dialogue - biting, witty, tangential, anything but earnest - between Jack and Rose? Never mind that conversational English from 1912 would seem impossibly corny to our modern ears.

The events of recent years have made me more sympathetic to Cameron's crude skewering of the upper crust too. Billy Zane's Cal is no cartoon super-villain; he'd fit right in at Lehman Brothers circa 2007. I re-watched 'Titanic' recently, and noticed several moments where Zane's performance also suggests Cal isn't at ease with his distasteful actions. It's a better performance than I remembered.
