Rock Swings

Paul Anka
Rock Swings
Could this be anything other than a pathetic novelty record, like Pat Boone’s In a Metal Mood? Ottawa’s favourite son channels the spirit of Ol’ Blue Eyes, while Anka’s arranger recalls the moods and sounds of Sinatra’s great arranger Nelson Riddle. The end product is Frank’s Capitol era mixed with rock, alternative and pop from the last 25 years. This is the best thing Anka has done since writing “My Way.” Some of the arrangements are killer, espepecially “True” and “The Way You Make Me Feel” — but “Eye of the Tiger” asks what the hell was he thinking. Experimentation is the name of the game on here: “Black Hole Sun” is amazing; “Smells Like Teen Spirit” is plain embarrassing. Overall, it’s a lot of fun. Ring a ding- ding, baby!
