Passion Play

Directed by Mitch Glazer (eOne)

Two Oscar-nominated actors who should know better: Bill Murray, revisiting his gangster character from Mad Dog and Glory, seems to understand how silly this movie is, while Mickey Rourke plays it straight, only admitting recently in an interview that he thinks Passion Play is “terrible.” He’s not wrong. In it he’s a down-on-his-luck trumpeter in a no-name town who, through events too preposterous to detail, inspires a girl with wings (Megan Fox doing her best Jennifer Tilly little girl whisper) to escape life in a carnival sideshow, before losing her to Murray’s villain. Maybe screenwriter Glazer, in his first effort as a writer-director, was aiming for a Wim Wenders or Jim Jarmusch-styled modern fable. He misses by a wide margin.
