Opening fakeries

Was any of that real?

AFP is reporting that pigtailed little Lin Miaoke, who sang at the opening ceremonies, was chosen for her looks by Chinese bureaucrats because the party thought the real singer, Yang Peiyi was too fat and had crooked teeth. In a rehearsal, China's ruling Communist Party politburo, who came to check it out, said something along the lines of "that kid is way too ugly to be the face of China. Ditch her."Anyone watching the opening ceremonies could see fairly obviously that the little girl wasn't singing. Less obvious (though still slightly) was the fakery of the fireworks. Some were pre-recorded, and some were wholly faked by computer in what was supposed to be a "live feed." You'd think the country who invented fireworks could put together a giant fireworks show without using trickery. But I suppose elaborate fireworks plans are a lot to ask when you're busy removing half a million construction workers and who knows how many cats out of your capital city to clean it up. (Photo courtesy AP)There they are. I don't think little Yang looks that bad...especially since Lin looks like the robot from the crappy '80s TV series, Small Wonder...
