Oh those Russians! Laura's Cafe opens

Russian eatery brings borscht to Halifax bellies

It makes all kinds of sense that a cafe offering authentic Russian cuisine made by Russian Canadians would open in Halifax, if you consider the climate. What's the temperature in Vladivostok this week? Highs of 19 Celsius, lows of 4. Sounds familiar. Started by married couple Alex Bagyulia (who grew up in St Petersburgh) and Laura Pettipas (from Pyatigorsk, in the south. They met here.) Laura's Cafe (1022 Barrington Street near Inglis, 431-4594) specializes in Russian and Canadian cuisine. Come in for a fortifying bowl of borscht, meaty perogies, stews, shish kabobs, lamb dishes, even crepes. And all-day breakfasts are available, too. Hours are Tues-Thurs, Sun 8am-8pm, Fri-Sat 8am-9pm, closed Monday.
