Words pulled the Halifax-based rapper out of his closed-off youth.

“Growing up in Antigua, there was never a place for anyone to express themselves in that shared manner. If anything, the closest thing to that was church—and that was a no,”  says Edwin Hull with a laugh. “So I kind of started just writing my feelings down for myself.”

Growing up, Hull—who now records and performs as Yohvn Blvck (pronounced Yohan Black)—says he struggled to find places to explore his emotion and express his vulnerability. He remembers a high school writing assignment as a pivotal moment in his relationship with creativity: Though he ended up handing in a “puff piece”—still hesitant to let others into his world—it sparked a keen interest in poetry that has stuck with him.

Still, he says, there’s a significant distance between making art for yourself and taking the leap to sharing it with others, between exploring your vulnerability openly and communally. After a few false starts, Hull has made connections at Centreline Studios on Gottingen Street and with other local musicians like Aquakultre’s Lance Sampson—connections that have given him the space to make music exactly as he wants to. Yohvn Blvck now feels more true to his vision than it ever has—he hopes his afternoon set at OBEY will be genuine and transparent, the sound of an artist deciding to let others in.
