Not very smarty ants? | Opinion | Halifax, Nova Scotia | THE COAST

To the editor,

Further to Lezlie Lowe's "Myrmecophobia" column, June 26: One thing that worked for me, years ago, was to first observe how the ants were getting in.

They are very methodical creatures. And once they lay down a scent trail, they follow it again and again. After I saw where they were going, I made a small glass of sugar and water and laid it down just next to their trail, but just outside the house.

Eventually, they noticed this and began to go no further. I was able to further modify their route by placing the sugar water even further from the house. A good ant film is Charlton Heston's The Naked Jungle (1954).

Maybe watch it this winter, when the ants will be just a memory.
