No blemishes on The Skin I Live In

Plastic surgery gets the hauntingly beautiful Pedro Almodovar treatment.

A genre-defying mix of horror and melodrama, The Skin I Live In is the latest tale of obsession and sexual identity from Spanish auteur Pedro Almodovar. Antonio Banderas stars as a wealthy plastic surgeon who has mutated pig cells to create a transgenic human skin resistant to burns. Banderas' leading-man good looks add to the creepy intensity of the doctor whose research and motives are mysteriously tied to the woman he keeps prisoner in his mansion. It's tempting to only want to talk about the major plot twist the film effectively springs, but doing so downplays how thorough of a movie Almodovar has created. From the beautiful actors, to the lush scenery and the haunting music by Alberto Iglesias, everything here is a veneer of beauty that hides madness and perversity beneath.
