New Super Mario Bros. U

(Nintendo) WiiU

super-review.jpg
Mario’s back again to help kick off Nintendo’s shiny new console, however instead of coming off as a stale rehash as New Super Mario Bros. 2 did on the 3DS, this platformer introduces fresh new ideas that reinvigorate the tried and true formula. This is another 2D Mario game—so you’ll be running and jumping on a linear path on your way to rescue Princess Peach. The controls are tight and the colours pop in HD. New items add some fresh gameplay ideas to the experience including adorable baby Yoshis that float and a new power up that lets you glide to safety. The WiiU’s gamepad is perhaps the most interesting addition, when playing with a group, the person who’s using the gamepad can add platforms by tapping the touchscreen for teammates to jump on. It can help or add to chaos that is co-op Mario. 2D Mario was just starting to feel tired, but thanks to new gameplay options, the experience feels renewed.
