My Chemical Romance

Danger Days (reprise)

The subtitle to My Chem’s newest concept album is The True Lives of the Fabulous Killjoys, about a team of somethings saving something from the apocalypse, maybe? There are a lot of laser synths---way too many---to indicate when we’re inside the Killjoys story, but the band would’ve been better off abandoning such high-octane grandiosity for late-album cuts like ’80s-leaning mid-tempo pop anthems “Summertime” and “The Kids From Yesterday,” which feel shades more honest, natural and listenable than the two-thirds that come before them. The ambitious rock band is novel these days, but the glamtastic, bombastic approach that worked on The Black Parade buries the hooks and gets in the way here, perhaps because they did it right the first time. It’s not awful, but it takes considerable, fans-only effort.
