Movie review ageist

To the editor,

Your movie listings page contained the following remark about the film Nights in Rodanthe: "Ew. Old-people sex!" (On Screen, Oct. 2). I should like to ask the author of that observation a question. Had the relationship been between two lesbians, two gays or an interracial couple, would you have made such a remark? No, and for good reason: It would be offensive. What makes you think it is not offensive in this case? As for the sex being between old people, the two protagonists are Diane Lane and Richard Gere. At 43, Lane is hardly over the hill. And though Gere, at 59, is no spring chicken, as a female friend of mine, age 35, put it, "I'd do him." This is not to defend the film---it's terrible---or to suggest the relationship it portrays is not between older people. The point is that ageism is gratuitous and has no place in The Coast.
