Metro Transit idle on idling

up to three minutes to inflate, HRM’s own website says it’s only “about one minute.” Idling buses pollute our air and waste our tax dollars.

In response to Jennifer Casey’s “Polluting buses” (Feb. 19, News), I echo concerns about emissions released by Metro Transit buses ignoring its anti-idling policy. Metro buses are to be shut off after three minutes of idling, which accounts for the time it takes to reinflate air brakes. While the article quotes DriveWiser co-ordinator Gina Patterson saying air brakes on buses take up to three minutes to inflate, HRM’s own website says it’s only “about one minute.” Idling buses pollute our air and waste our tax dollars. Metro Transit: Prove your commitment to anti-idling is more than hot air. ---Milena McWatt, Halifax
