The SBTS production of Measure for Measure is a wonderful introduction to this dark comedy for people who, like me, are unfamiliar with this play. The winning cast makes the language lucid and accessible and Elizabeth Murphy’s direction keeps the pace brisk. It’s a story rife with political corruption, sexual entanglements and moral dilemmas. The Duke of Vienna (Jeremy Hutton) desires to purge his city of the laws that condemn fornicators to death. He leaves his fiercely moralistic Second-in-Command Angelo (Doug MacAulay) in charge, and then secretly watches how he fares. Angelo turns out to be a merciless hypocrite who plots to deflower the unbending Isabella (Carly Chamberlain). Needless to say, this is not a laugh-a-minute-comedy, but it’s lighter than you might think, thanks to characters like the overzealous cop Elbow (Kevin McPherson) and the slatternly bawd Mistress Overdone (Keelin Jack).
