Meaghan Smith

The Cricket's Quartet

Meaghan Smith
The Cricket's Quartet
The Halifax chanteuse's major-label debut is being rolled out in parts, beginning with this EP. Produced by Jill Barber's longtime helmsman, Les Cooper, its four tracks have been smartly selected: Smith's homage to her grandfather, the languid "I Know," which is an unexpected and delightful collaboration with Kid Koala, "A Little Love;" the big-band blowout "If You Asked Me" and downtempo "Drifted Apart." It has an old-timey feel, as though you're spinning the record on a Victrola or maybe you're sitting in a smoky bar in the roaring '20s, but Smith's voice---clear and soaring---reminds you that this is fresh and new. It's all happening.
