Meaghan Smith

The Cricket’s Orchestra (Sire)

After nearly two years of EP, online and exclusive in-store releases we finally get to hold Meaghan Smith's full-length in our mittens. Smith satisfies soft hearts who melt from old-timey romantic nostalgia: the warm glow of her 1940s-inspired videos, the Joseph Cornell-like collage in the liner notes and the crackling gramophone that opens up the album. There are modern flourishes that also delight: Kid Koala's scratches on "A Little Love," the twang of producer Les Cooper's slide guitar on "Drifted Apart." Smith's voice is timeless, charming without affectation. She roars with the big band horns on "If You Asked Me," then devastates with the late-night plea "Five More Minutes." Worth waiting for.
