Man of Steel

Sullen alien smashes his way through daddy issues

Superman deals with daddy issues while killing thousands in the amazingly off-mark Man of Steel. Years ago, on a far away planet called Krypton, two married scientists…what's that? You already know Superman's origin? Well too bad, because director Zack Snyder is going to waste forty minutes to retell the beginnings of the most well-known fantasy figure in North America. Henry Cavill looks the part, but like his super suit, he's mostly washed out and lacking colour. A whole justice league of supporting actors are misused—maybe none more so than Amy Adams' pointless Lois Lane. Superman's greatest threats have always been those he can't punch his way past (evil businessmen, heart attacks, entropy), which is what allows the character to examine the psychology of being human and the choice to become a hero. Man of Steel is about a sullen alien destroying entire cities to beat up his plot hole opponent and an army of phallic spaceships. An utter waste.
