Make Me A Woman

Vanessa Davis (Drawn & Quarterly)

As a newbie to Vanessa Davis’ writings and artwork, Make Me a Woman is not just a treat, but a feast for the eyes. Eschewing the traditional four-panel format for more complex layouts, her sense of composition and perspective supplies each page with vibrancy and flow. While her line drawings (partial erase marks and all) perfectly address the fleeting, mundane everyday activities of these diaristic entries (visits to the dentist, arguing with her boyfriend over bits of leftovers in the fridge), it is Davis’ richly engaging watercolours and expressive character rendering, especially the playful full-page portraits, which stand out and align her with the likes of Linda Barry and Maira Kalman.
