Maggie’s Getting Married's perfect mix of snappy and sexy

Maggie's Getting Married is the best thing the Bedford Players has done to date.

It’s been a banner season for comedies at our community theatres. First there was Dartmouth Players’s fun, frothy Don’t Dress for Dinner. Then, TAG’s outstanding production of Norm Foster’s Drinking Alone. Finally, there’s another Foster play, Maggie’s Getting Married, staged by the Bedford Players, and I must say, this is the best thing I’ve seen them do to date. The cocktail of actors in this snappy, sexy piece is a perfect mix of just-over-the-top (Bonnie Matthews as the lovingly controlling mom, Jill Curley as the sexpot sister, and Rafael Ziah Franco as the gynophobic actor) and the more grounded in reality (Curtis Skinner as the seemingly wholesome groom-to-be, Michael Taylor the introspective, middle-aged dad and Rachel Franco as the sweet, sincere Maggie). The end result is a fun evening of first-class theatre for less than the price of a movie and popcorn.---Kate Watson. Bedford Players Theatre, 1408 Bedford Highway, Through May 9, 8pm, $12/$10
