Lykke Li

Wounded Rhymes (Atlantic)

lykke-review.jpg
Sweden continues to to hit well above its weight in the area of pop music that can stop you in your tracks. On her sophomore effort, Li sings words that live up to the gothic echo, organ and rhythm settings of Björn Yttling from Peter, Björn and John. Mystery and longing like the Shangri-Las resonate here unlike anything in the 45 years since. Pleasure is a refuge from trouble all around, where “a shotgun needs an outcome” in “Get Some.” “We will live longer than I will,” from “Love Out of Lust,” is worthy of Roy Orbison. The album images could have been by Ingmar Bergman. Despair leavens hypnotic beats which ascend to dreamscape. Their winters are longer than ours.
