Live show review

Stars and Broken Social Scene

Published January 27, 2005.Live show reviewStars and Broken Social SceneJanuary 21 and 22 at The Marquee Club Stars and Broken Social Scene careened into Halifax and staked their claim for the best shows of the year, despite the temperature outside and long coat check line inside. Props go to In-Flight Safety and Wintersleep, who held their own with two of the best live acts around. On Friday, members Stars admitted fatigue from their week-long east coast tour and Broken Social Scene seemed a bit rusty from its album recording hiatus, which resulted in the crowd witnessing a looser, but still breathtaking affair. Saturday proved the better night as the bands seemed determined to top themselves the second time out. Stars played a more consistent and downright danceable set and Broken Social Scene contributed a more subdued, yet tighter performance. Highlights included Stars’ singers Torquil Campbell and Amy Millan’s sexy, rock star posturing and Saturday’s show-ending jam with members from all the acts. When all was said and done, the kids left sweaty, happy and impressed. —JohnstonFarrow
