Update: Apparently there's so much new music happening in Halifax, it broke the internet. Or at least the massive list of bands and embedded songs is so info-packed, it's really good at breaking web browsers. Phone-based browsers especially. So we've added some options to get you into our annual New Music Issue as smoothly as possible. Enjoy.

Welcome to the 2017 New Music Issue, the most epic version of our annual round-up of up-and-comers on the amazingly healthy Halifax scene. Here are a few quick links to get you where you want to go:

Ideal for phones, 101 New Music acts text list

Full list with songs and photos of 101 acts

Graphic map of genres and connections between all the acts

Five-hour playlist of songs from almost all of the NMI acts

These bands, solo musicians and musical projects have all started up locally within the last year, give or take. That fact alone says a lot about the state of local live music. Venues may close, bands may break up and grant applications may be rejected, but nothing can stop the flow of new sounds. It’s out there, you just need to go experience it. If you’re housebound, most of these musicians have music online. In fact, we’ve created a streaming playlist to accompany the feature, it can be found below. Warning: There might be some swears. There might be some music you absolutely hate. But there might be some music you absolutely can’t live without.
